Hope everyone had a happy 4th of July! We had a good ole American barbecue - with real, live Americans in attendance. And I mean Americans BESIDES JUST ME AND MY SON! A victorious day.
In order to not poison the Americans with "halal" meat from our local shops, which I generally deem fine for our everyday use but was worried about poisoning guests because with burgers, you never know who's going to want medium or rare and our local shops usually cut poultry and beef on the same table. Wow, that was a run on sentence that never ended. But the point of it was supposed to be that I drove to another state to go to a butcher shop I'd only heard of through word of mouth and it was just as great as I'd heard.
Everyone wanted well done after all, so perhaps the special butcher was overkill. But the coleslaw was fantastic, our guests brought deviled eggs to up the Americana ante a bit, and the kosher hot dogs were delicious too, lemonade was ice-cold and the root beer was extra soapy. Pillsbury Funfetti red, white & blue cupcakes finished out the afternoon. And no intestinal troubles reported thus far, so all in all, a success I'd say!
After our America barbecue we went for a local fireworks show. I think it was the first time my father-in-law had seen big fireworks in person. He loved them. And then something that's quickly becoming a 4th of July tradition in my household - funnel cake!
Hope you all had a great Independence Day!

We had a tikka party on the roof for the fourth, no fireworks though :-( We'll probably do the same on Aug. 14th too.
Also about the root beer/PB/butter thing linked to(how did I miss this post the first time around?!)-My DH likes root beer, but the rest of the in laws don't, they all love PB though. And Butter? In my American family we spread a thin scrapping of butter on toast, but my in laws? A SLAB of butter more than a quarter of an inch thick on a piece of toast. I kid you not! Ick, ick, I can feel it in my arteries just thinking about it.
my Pak husband just told me he was talking to his friend in Karachi that has a Canadian fiance, and "She reads Gori Wife too!" I don't know how this information came about, but you're quite popular and/or it's a small world after all. :)
Ha ha ha! That's fantastic to think that people are talking about me
somewhere halfway around the world :)
Aishah, My inlaws put butter on their plates and eat it like achar, squeezing off bits with double-roti to make some weird butter niwala or something - so I know exactly what you're talking about.
Laughing about the butter. In my family: drizzle it with honey and scoop it up with roti... Awww yeah...
But really, who is that goshtwala??? I know I'm in vaguely the same area as you guys and hate our butchers. That looks like jannah! Especially now that my fil is out of town and not here to argue with butchers to give him the good meat. I stink at meat shopping! I NEED that store. I will go on a road trip to go there! Please please tell!

UmmIbrahim, it's Rockville Gourmet Halal Meat Market, or something like that, on Rockville Pike. It was really nice, the service there was AMAZING, just like some homey, 1950's middle American style butcher. But it was super-dooper expensive!
nice info
