Hazard

One of the hazards of living in a household with extended family is that all the laundry gets put into one pile for the maid to do when she comes in the mornings - assuming there's water, which is not always the case, but we'll get to that later. This may not seem like a hazard, I mean come on, at home I'd have to do my own laundry! But then, after the laundry is done, it gets hung out to dry. In the part of the house that is the entry, the foyer, the path to the bathroom, and at the edge of the dining room - basically in the area where everyone must constantly be walking through. What's the hazard in that you ask?

If you are ever in an extended family laundry situation - you can be sure that there will never be any privacy for the drying of privates. Thats why we were taught at an early age to never hand over undies and bras to the laundry maid/massi. In these situations, you wash your own privates and dry them in a private closet, your room's bathroom, or even sometimes let them dry in your suitcases - sounds difficult but you really have little choice at times. Good luck.

Our house has a really big roof area with a bathroom where we keep the washing machine, the wash is put on the clothesline out side. We usually put all the underthings on the line and cover them with a spare duppatta, so nobody seems them.

This is a good cultural lesson :)
When I lived in India, I did not know maids were not supposed to clean my 'delicates'. I put them in the wash for the maid to take. From that day forward, me and that maid did not get along very well. She would spread rumors about me and she was clearly very offended. I tried all I could to remedy the situation, but nothing ever worked. Once I found out what the problem was, I started hoarding water in my hostel room, washing and drying my own 'delicates' then later clothes in general, but drying my delicates in a cupboard/closet as someone else suggested.
I like Aishah's idea. I think I used that in India a few times too!

Aishah is correct...you do cover them up with a dopatta...but in case going out and doing that is embarrassing I suggest you do the hoarding!

I'm so glad you have this blog, gori wife. I know the feeling of being alone in an unknown culture. At least by sharing your mishaps you can get moral support, advice and at least a good laugh out of the bizarre happenings of life. :)

Yes, I pack a small plastic drying ring with attached clothes pins that has a hanger on top (same or similar items available at any plastic goods shop) and wash mee own skivvies for the reasons explained above as well as for privacy/modesty...and to hide my padded bra ;)

Truely spreaking while growing in Karachi -- in a very conservative society than - it was common on roofs to see bra hanging and nobody ever get excited....

But now thinking back I think it was very weird

Goriwife! for some reason your blog has gotten classified as 'pornography' and I can't access it from my home computer because of the security software I have installed. is it in your control to undo that at all?

as far as drying part my Mom has a very corner in the backyard under the guava tree, where she spread the so called smalls...and at times maid cover it with duppata...no one objects it, no issues anyone finds and no one can...we are a big house and small family :-)

Hey I have a question. You celebrated Christmas growing up right? Do you do anything with your own Children for Christmas...non- Christian specific things like Santa/Tree/Presents?

Hello, I would also like to know what happens around christmas time for you and your family. Does your son believe in santa claus?

My ammi said that the best way is to spread a dupatta on top of the bra and underwear...especially if the dupatta is lawn or some other sheer dupatta. It dries fine and your stuff isn't hanging out for the world to see haha :D
