History & Cheeseburgers

Just a regular old cheeseburger, sitting in its paper wrapper...

Today was the last day of my parent's week long visit. They come every year for my son's birthday and my mother, who is a cake decorator, makes a big fancy cake. We had a whole lot of other things planned, touristy things, but we were all tired from all the cake work and all screwed up from daylight savings time.

One of the things we were going to see but nixed was the Holocaust Museum, we even watched a couple of movies on that theme as well, and I remembered something interesting about M. In many ways, he learned a LOT more in school that I did. Math, Science, even English grammar - but in history it's s different picture. His history books didn't even mention WWII or the Holocaust at all. Not at all. And he went to VERY GOOD schools. And he says that the syllabus is the same for all schools in the Karachi division.

Well, at least the cake was good. My mom made a huge cheeseburger, french fries and a drink - and it was all made out of cake!

In case you thought I was lying about it being cake.

That's a pretty awesome cake! Do you read the Cake Wrecks blog. It's tagline is "When Professional Cakes Go Horribly, Hilariously Wrong" and is completely accurate.

Awesome cake!
It's good to hear more about you and your family.
You've told us in detail about your husband's family/childhood etc etc.
I'd like to know more about you.
Is your husband as interested in your background/childhood/experiences etc as you are of his?

Unless you take history as an elective, the only history Pakistani public school curriculum includes is that of the subcontinent. So yes there is some mention of WWII but only in the context of the Indian independence struggle.

That cake is awesome.

As far as history goes I think it is the same in every country. In the U.S. there a considerable number of Jews and therefore it would be mentioned in books here.

In fact there are so many different races here it would make sense to mention a little of everything here.

In Pakistan, India and Bangladesh there are hardly any jews so the holocaust doesn't take presedence. However, the mughal empire, the ocupation of the British and the partition of 1947 are mentioned in detail in school books.
I bet a lot of people who go to good schools in the U.S. don't know about that, even thought the partition of 1947 is a unique event as before or after no 2 countries having willingly seperated on the basis of religion.

What may seem important to an American might not effect the life of a person sitting in Japan and vice versa.

I don't think it is that you got to learn better history and M got to learn a more ignorant form. I guess if you were to talk about history with some Pakistani to him/her you would seem lacking in knowledge about historical events.

By teaching history most people are trying to teach their future generations about their roots.

I personally think everyone everywhere should be taught a little bit of everything about other countries and world events. However, I know by suggesting this there are some million of students who are cursing my very existence. :) Not to mention people who write school books. :)
Including history from everywhere doesn't make logistical sense though it sounds like a good idea and a positive step towards a less ignorant world.

whoa thats a awesome cake!!!i remember that legal pad one too from ur old posts!that was so pretty too...im sure they tasted great too :)

and yes thanks to the distorted version of history we learn in our schools...we dont get to know bout holocaust in our text books...plus the actual version of ALL indo-pak wars!and many other things..they just omit out that history they dont want the impressionable kids to know about! :P

The cake is awesome.

and I agree with Anon.

Also in my curriculum we didnt cover WW in detail... So we had seperate projects. Like every student was given a topic in history which we didnt cover otherwise in the curriculum, and they had to make presentations and hand outs and all... So we did know about a lot of the stuff other kids didnt know ..

Belated Birthday wishes for your baby!!! The cake looks fab!

About history at school, I agree with Anonymous. American public schools follow a pretty rigid American curriculum..and so I suppose Pakistani (as well as Indian, and other regions) have their own curriculums with an emphasis on other historical events. However, there are British, American, International schools which I'm sure focus on the World Wars and other global occurances in detail.

In the US they don't have a mention of Islam in world civilization class. Yup hard to believe but go and check Houston district high school books.

I think M.'s experience is very similar to that of students in the U.S. I wonder how many students here can even find Pakistan on a map, much less describe the relative genocide that took place in Punjab during the partition.

I do disagree (and am even slightly uncomfortable) with the point that a few made up in the comments regarding how we learn about the Holocaust because there are a lot of Jews in America. Actually, we learn about WWII and the Holocaust in detail in the United States because it represents a pivotal moment in our history in terms of foreign policy (and no, not just regarding Israel, but in general). It also represents a turning point in our approach to military law and even gender issues.
