I had three disappointments this weekend.
Friday the First:
("My Terrible Urdu" 2nd Edition)
What I meant to say: The Baby was asking for some grapes.
What I said: Bacha angoor se poocha tha.
What I actually said: The baby was questioned the grapes.
Saturday the Second:
(at a dinner party)
Hostess: Are you fasting?
Me: Yes.
Hostess: (increduously) Will you fasting the WHOLE month?
Me: (with a strained, mean tension in my voice that I instantly regretted) Yeeessssss..... And I have been for seven years now.
Monday the Third:
(this evening with M, after watching this video)
Me: How do you think my Urdu compares to his?
M: It doesn't.
Me: No really, what percentage of his Urdu do you think I have?
M: Zero.
Me: (Looking hurt)
M: Maybe five percent?

nah, that is too honest. Anyways, I liked the grapes one. :-))) That was very cute. I am also horrible at Urdu. ;-)
it's not that it is too honest is that he could have phrased it better. eHugs hun!
Long time, no leave comment... but at least you know SOME Urdu- I've been married to mine for almost 7 years now and I can decipher some stuff when he's talking but still can't utter a word myself.... don't feel bad.

The fact that you can even speak some according to random actual circumstances is waaaaay more than 5%! All I can say are the few sentences computer software has taught me - and those are stupid things like the cat is under the table. Completely useless.
Nice that M came back with the 5% for effort!!(?) Your Urdu seems far better than that though! :)
Neato, my bf was recently telling me about this dude. I am thinking that I might take Urdu classes. They have free ones here in Mississauga.

But its not that hard if you actually stop thinking sentences in English and then translate. :P
Thanks for the support. I don't think M was being honest. I mean, mathematically speaking - if this guy knew 0% of his Urdu he wouldn't know anything. So even if I knew ONE word in Urdu I'd have more than 0% of it. 5% is a similarly poor estimation. I'm not saying I'm anywhere near that guy, but I do carry on conversations - albeit stilted, halting, and sometimes not effective ones. But still, 5%?!?
