What Happens When You Ask Your MIL To Take The Day Off

Yesterday morning, I told my mother in law that I would cook dinner that night. I told her that since it was her first day at our house, she should take the day off. Relax a bit. She argued with me (like she always does) about how she didn't need to relax that much, she needed some work to keep her busy, that I had a lot of studying I should be doing. I persisted. Even brought M into the discussion for my translation needs, saying that on Day 2 she could swing into full taking-care-of-us mode. She relented (or so I thought!), I started dinner, and a little over an hour later I went looking for her downstairs and found this:

A months worth of laundry, folded. Now M won't have to go find his own shirt from the big pile on the floor in front of the dryer. Or wear a wrinkled shirt to work!

amazing! lucky you.

what did you cook for dinner though?

LuckyFatima - Chili! I think it's my new half-Pakistani go-to dish. It's like Rajma so not-too-different, I can make it spicy, it's often served with rice, and then I can make my own with crackers & cheese - or fritos! Yum for everyone!

Does your husband get annoyed if she helps? Like he feels his mom shouldn't be doing any house work? Many Desi husbands do.

Habibah - No, thank god, he doesn't get annoyed. I think he thinks of a household as everybody pitching in. He's a feminist and he shares equally in the housework when we're alone, so often these days he'll get up to make both of us tea. Plus, he knows how hard I'm working and one of the reasons my MIL came was to help out while I'm studying for a big test. Also, she generally pushes hard to cook and clean and whatnot, so it's hard to stop her anyway.

Can you send her to my house? Please? I have a mountain of laundry I will never possibly ever get folded. LOL

How can it is acceptable for your hubby to wear wrinkled shirt at work, especially a PhD - What kind of work he do? Most working people would use dry cleaner to avoid such situation.

LOL @ Mani. . . I think she was dramatizing a little bit. . .my MIL, though I've never met her. . .I don't think she'd do that for me.

@ Mani - Oh believe me, in my husband's line of work a wrinkled shirt is totally acceptable. In fact, wearing full length PANTS is like being overdressed. REALLY! He seriously wears jeans and a t-shirt every day to work. A lot of times in America it's like having a Ph.D. buys you a relaxed work environment. I can't say what kind of work he does because I don't want him to be found out. (Right, Grey Pilgram?)

Maa cleaned the house yesterday for us too - we came home and all of the dog hair and dust had disappeared! In their place was a pretty awesome fish curry and some crab.

Gotta love it when the in-laws are visiting.
