White on White Transgressions - My Confession

In today's final installment of the Gori Wife's 3-part series entitled "Staring At White Girls," (Part 1 and Part 2) I'd like to discuss the absolute WORST aspect of this phenomenon. We've already covered that we white girls get stared at while visiting the Indian subcontinent. We've also  already covered that we white girls get stared at while in our OWN country. What could top this, you ask?

The Enemy Within!

I am guilty of it too! I stare at white girls!

Every time I see a half desi / half caucasian couple walking around, my head swivels too! I want to stop them and say "HI! Can We Go Talk Somewhere About Out Shared Experiences?!?!" My breath catches, my heart races. It's so exciting! I just want to know MORE! All those same prying questions I hate being asked rush to the forefront of my mind. How did they meet? What did his parents think? Has she travelled to India/Pakistan/Nepal? And don't even get me started if its a white GUY with a desi GIRL! OhMyGodIWantToKnowEverything!!!

In an attempt to rid myself of this horrible disease, this urge to pry into other people's lives, I will fess up to the most egregious of incidences. Karachi - 2004. After shopping in Zainab Market, driving home down Abdullah Haroon Road, for the first time, I saw a white girl in Pakistan. I was so amazed. I kept saying "There's a white girl! There's a white girl!" She had her two (maybe three?) kids with her, she was carrying a Louis Vuitton purse. She was with what looked like a sister-in-law and had her Aya (nanny) with her, and she was wearing jeans and a cropped leather jacket. She seemed perfectly comfortable. No wearing cheap shalwar kameez to try to get better prices. I was so excited that Ammi asked M "Whytegul Kya Hai?"

And then? I couldn't help myself? I took a picture!

New reader I'm intrigued...and a fan of inter-racial marriages.

I once saw a heavily pregnant white woman at the store in KHI, she was wearing a shalwar qameez, but I could tell instantly that she was American because of her looks and manner and also that here eyebrows were overplucked in that typical American way...I stayed quiet but I also had that urge to go talk to her. I kind of wished I would have. But what would I have said? I have seen several women who I felt to be goris (you can't always tell because there is a lot of diversity in ppl's physical appearances in PK). But I never got up the nerve to talk to them. Maybe next time I will just to see what happens.

gori wife ur funny. i enjoy reading ur accounts. i'm pakistani but born and raised in u.s. so i guess i understand what ur going through since i've heard this story from quite a few gori wives. but i just wanna say that any moving, breathing female gets stared at in pakistan. but i guess more so when the men (and many women) get to see a gori up front LIVE! lol anyways keep up the good work, gives me a good chuckle at night when i finally sit down and relax and go on the internet. lol

Salaam sister... interesting post! Funny you and I are in "the same boat" as I'm married to a Pakistani and I'm African American!

She, from the back even, looks vaguely familiar... Love reading your blog! I approach any and every ghori married to a Paki when I am out both here in the states and in PK.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I'm not IN Pakistan, and I've only visited there twice. The picture is from the first visit, way back when. I'm so impressed by those of you who actually go up to other pardesi wives. I'm too shy and I wouldn't know what to say! What do you guys say?!?!

And Empress Anisa, I'm so intrigued by the experience of an African American marrying a Pakistani. With all that blatant racism, and the merging of even more cultural difference, I'm definitely going to keep checking out your blog.

I used to stare at 'rare sightings' of white people when I used in live in Bangladesh, like they are some kind of alien or something :P.

I'm not an Urdu speaker, so I was wondering what "Whytegul Kya Hai" means? I love your blogs by the way, they're so funny and interesting! You have made me very tired in the mornings after reading them late!! :)

I'm not sure if you are still reading this comments. I just discovered your blog and have been reading from the beginning, working my way to the present.

Anyway, wanted to let you know that I'm a Pakistani girl married to a gora firefighter for the past 7 years (we've been in a relationship for 11). I much like you want to 'dish' with half pakistani/half white couples. So let me know if you want to exchange email addresses! :)
